Course Description

This course aims to help learners develop core digital skills that support independence, confidence, and connection in modern life. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Use a mouse, keyboard, and basic computer functions confidently
  • Navigate the internet safely and search effectively
  • Set up and use email, video calling, and word processing tools
  • Manage and organise files, folders, and digital photos
  • Explore AI tools (like ChatGPT) for everyday tasks and learning
  • Access learning and entertainment resources online (e.g., BBC iPlayer, YouTube)
  • Understand good habits for privacy, safety, and digital wellbeing

Aims and Objectives

Learners will draw upon a range of texts as reading stimulus and engage with creative as well as real and relevant contexts. Learners will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes.

This specification will ensure that learners can read fluently and write effectively.
Learners will be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts.

At the end of the course each learner will have the opportunity to take an examination that will lead to a GCSE in English Language.

Progression – what next?

This course builds a strong foundation for anyone looking to feel more confident and capable with technology in their everyday life. Whether you’re aiming to stay connected with family and friends, manage tasks online, or simply feel more independent using digital tools, this course provides the essential skills to move forward.

After completing the course, learners may choose to continue developing their digital knowledge independently or explore other adult learning opportunities when available. These might include more advanced digital skills, personal development topics, or community learning initiatives.

The core skills gained – including internet safety, communication tools, and basic file management – are highly transferable and can support everyday life, volunteering, future work, or further education.

How progress and success will be recorded

Progress will be measured through informal tasks, group discussions, and one-to-one support. Students will complete a short personal progress plan at the beginning of the course and reflect on their development throughout. The focus is on building confidence and achieving practical goals relevant to each learner.
