Course Description

This course is aimed at learners with no previous knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, but willing to embark on a life-changing intercultural journey.

Built on a mix of traditional and technology-based teaching, it provides an opportunity to practice communication in real-life situations.

Through a range of activities, students gradually build their vocabulary and fluency, learn how to write characters at a basic level, and discover Chinese culture.

Aims and Objectives

This course aims at enabling learners to use Mandarin Chinese to exchange information and communicate ideas at a basic level. To this end, it equips students with listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as some knowledge of Chinese culture. By the end of the ten weeks, learners have the necessary tools to survive in a range of everyday situations, by means of simple and effective language.

Progression – what next?

By the end of this course, learners will be equipped to continue studying Mandarin Chinese at Beginner 2 level.

How progress and success will be recorded

The course is based on closely guiding and supporting students, both in class and at home, to help them make the most of their learning. There are no tests or exams: oral feedback is provided in lessons, and students wishing to submit their homework will be offered written feedback as well.

Materials / Equipment required for First Class

Learners are advised to bring a notebook and pens/pencils; squared paper for writing practice will be provided.
