Hear from the Principal

October 4, 2024

It has been yet another packed week in College this week, with so many trips/visits and activities going on!

Reminder: Clubs and EduLink

Our clubs programme, iCAS Xtra, is now fully up and running and information has been shared with students and parents. Whether your child is interested in creative arts, sports, or service-oriented projects, there is something for everyone. Participation in these activities helps to develop skills such as teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking—key attributes of the IB Learner Profile, which is central to our educational philosophy at IVC.

To sign up, simply:

  • Navigate to the Clubs section on Edulink One.
  • Explore the available clubs and activities.
  • Register your child for as many clubs as they are interested in.

For more details about the specific offerings, times, and locations, please refer to the iCASXtra timetable. All clubs are free of charge, except for the Triathlon and Junior Gym clubs, for which separate arrangements are provided in the timetable.

International Week of Languages

This week we are celebrating International Languages Week. This is a week that provides us a chance as a College to reflect on the importance of languages in our personal lives, at our College and in our world. We are fortunate to have many bilingual staff and students and their languages and experiences all enrich the cultural diversity of our College. Across the week, there will be assemblies raising awareness of the importance of languages and promoting linguistic diversity. There will also be a language nut competition for years 7-11 and students are encouraged to explore the European Day of Languages website. Alongside this, all students in years 7-13 can start honing their baking skills in advance of the International Cake competition on Tuesday 22nd October- I can’t wait to see their efforts!

Senior Maths Challenge

Following on from last week’s Olympiad, our KS4 and KS5 students took part in the UK Senior Mathematical Challenge on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for our keen mathematicians to participate in a first-round challenge against other students across the UK. In this competition, pupils answer 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes, with the highest scorers through to the Kangaroo and Olympiads. We can’t wait to see how they get on!

Careers Trip to PA Consulting

Continuing on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) theme, some of our year 7 and 8 pupils had the chance this week to attend a Careers Day with Mrs Baker at PA Consulting in Melbourn. They spent the day exploring the Global Innovation and Technology Centre, completing a STEM project, touring the lab and showcasing their ideas.

GCSE History Trip: Framlingham and Orford Castles

This week all of our Year 11 GCSE historians went to complete their site study visit to Framlingham and Orford castles, as part of the History Around Us unit. The students spent the day with their history teachers bringing the castle to life and learning about important features, which they will be able to write about in their exams next summer. This year, the department have expanded the trip to include Orford Castle as a comparison site, to help strengthen pupils’ answers when they are asked to draw comparisons between Framlingham and other similar sites.

Dance East Trip

Last weekend our Performance School and GCSE Dance students went on a brilliant trip to Dance East, to see the Jasmine Vardimon Company, which features one of our alumni, Evie Hart. Evie trained with us before joining London School of Contemporary Dance. The show was, by all accounts, “astounding” and the pupils stayed on for the after-show talk which was a great chance to find out more about the performance and meet some of the cast.

IB Visual Arts- Fitzwilliam Trip

Always a highlight in the IB Visual Arts calendar, our students have spent today on a curated gallery tour, giving them a chance to explore a wide variety of work under professional direction. After this tour, they had the opportunity to complete studies of the work on display as well as some time for individual exploration of the gallery. This work is very important as they begin to seek out artists and artworks to inspire their future practical explorations.
