Hear from the Principal

May 9, 2025

Despite only being a four day week in College (apart from for our year 13 IB students sitting exams on Monday, and the staff supporting them in College), it has been another busy one!

Spanish Exchange

A definite highlight for our Spanish students this week has been the return leg of the Spanish Exchange to Zaragoza. Around 20 students travelled out to visit and stay with their exchange partners this week, and spend time with them in school, as well as visiting sights such as Aragon, exploring the city centre in Zaragoza and engaging in a range of cultural activities. This year is a special one for the exchange, as it is the 25th anniversary of the partnership between IES Santiago Hernandez and Impington Village College.

Elemental Poetry Workshop

Tuesday was the next instalment of the Elemental Poetry Writing Workshops, led by Miss Page, for our budding poets. The students went to the workshop at King’s College School, led by local poet Peter Carpenter, which was designed to develop students’ poetic skill and confidence around the theme of the natural elements. The students are now at the redrafting and editing stage of their poetry writing, and we are looking forward to seeing their work published in the anthology later this term!

Poetry Translation Club

On the theme of poetry, one of our Languages trainees, Mr Minett, is leading a poetry translation club this term on Wednesday afternoons, for students to learn about translation, with the ultimate aim of helping them translate a poem of their choosing to enter the Stephen Spender prize (a national translation competition aimed at school pupils, with prizes!). We hope that many students will give this a go, and look forward to hearing about it!

House Surgeries

Thank you to our House and SEND teams this week for another successful round of House Surgeries. They provide a good opportunity for parents to have a face to face meeting with key members of staff, where there might be low level concerns about progress or pastoral issues.

Year 11 Exams

Yesterday our year 11 students started their final GCSE written examinations. We are so proud of all of them for all of the hard work they have put in revising in the lead-up to exams starting. This will continue with scheduled booster sessions throughout the exam period, and we are very grateful to all of the staff who are supporting with these.

Under 13 Cricket

On Friday, we had our first cricket U13 boys fixture of the summer away at Kings Ely. They scored a total of 135 and we narrowly missed out on the win, losing by only 2 runs in the Twenty over game. Noticeable performances were from Tom H scoring 32 runs and Derek M scoring 29 and getting 2 wickets. A great start to the cricket season.
