Hear from the Principal

July 19, 2024

I can’t believe this is the final blog of the academic year! It has been another incredible year at Impington, with many things to celebrate. We will be sharing some of the highlights over the summer on our social media channels, so please look out for these! It has also been a very busy week in College:

MYP Gardens: Judging

At the end of last week I had the privilege of judging the amazing gardens produced by our year 8 pupils as part of their Design Technology curriculum. We chose five gardens to be ‘highly commended’ and from here, chose one garden that was an absolute standout, to be created next year in the designated space. This garden was designed by Amanda F., and had beautiful attention to detail, as well as being highly practical and true to the brief. We will be sharing progress updates over the next few months- watch this space.

Mobile Phone update

This week we launched with students and parents our approach to the use of mobile phones in College from September. This has been a lengthy process which has involved feedback from staff, parents, pupils and the Local Governing Body. We are especially grateful to our student leadership team, the iSU Executive, who have spent time canvassing students and helping to produce resources for pupils for the launch. We will no longer be allowing pupils to use their phones in College apart from in the designated ‘phone zone’, for emergency contact. Full details can be found in the letter sent out to parents this week.

Model United Nations of Cambridge

Last week our sixth form students were involved in running and hosting the inaugural state school Model United Nations of Cambridge. Our Global Politics students worked exceptionally hard to organise the three-day conference, held jointly at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory and Impington Village College. We welcomed pupils from Herts & Essex, Birchwood High School, Ramsey Gatehouse Sixth Form, Cambridge Maths School and Bishop Laney.

Delegates addressed the West Nile Virus crisis, debated the weaponization of AI, and discussed construction in international waters. Their collaborative spirit and innovative solutions were a testament to their hard work and preparation. It was a great culmination of the first year of Model United Nations in the sixth form, and we are looking forward to our students representing us again at the MUN Conference in Munich in the autumn.

Student congratulations: IIC

This week we offer congratulations to two of our amazing sixth formers, Marina B. and Izzy H., both DP students in year 12. Marina is celebrating huge success in the International Biology Olympiad, where she was awarded a Gold certificate. This places her in the top 5% of participants globally. Her success is testament to her hard work and talent in Biology, and demonstrates the continued importance of the Sciences in the IBDP. We can’t wait to see more of Marina’s success next year.

Fellow IBDP student, Izzy H., has also been celebrating success after having her work selected to be showcased in the Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show. Izzy was one of 312 young artists chosen to have their work shown at the prestigious exhibition, from 21 000 students who entered. You can see her work on display, ‘Tolerating February Seaside’, at the Royal Academy in London during the summer holidays.

Sports Day

Today is Sports Day! Always a highlight in the College calendar, we have been blessed with glorious weather for our annual Sports Day. Pupils have been taking part in a range of events across the Track and Field, and have also been doing less traditional activities including the much-anticipated Tug of War. Watch out on social media for the announcement of the winning House!
