It has been a particularly busy week for our students with a number of trips, activities, competitions and more taking place. I am delighted to share details of these with you below.
Welcoming our next Year 12 students
While we prepare to celebrate our Year 13 students’ International Baccalaureate (IB) results on 6 July, we look ahead to welcome our next cohort of Year 12 students. On Wednesday, students who will enrol at our Sixth Form, Impington International College, in September joined us for their Offer Holder Day. This was an opportunity for our future students to connect with the teachers who will deliver their subject choices from the start of the new academic year and to become more accustomed to the College campus. Attendees also were able to speak to current students about life at the College. Thank you to all who attended – I look forward to welcoming you to our Sixth Form in September.
Parents of students looking to join our Sixth form in September 2025 are invited to join us on 23 October 2024 for our Open Evening. Learn more and secure your place.
Congratulations to our U15 boys’ cricket team
I have enjoyed sharing details of numerous recent sporting successes across my previous few blog posts and am pleased to share that this trend continues this week. Our U15 boys’ cricket team recently took part in the Cheffin’s Cup, hosted by King’s Ely where they competed against Kimbolton, King’s Ely and Wymondham. Our cricketers won their first game 151 – 92 and student, Murray C., put up an impressive 71 runs not out. The boys were eventually narrowly defeated by just 14 runs in the final against Kimbolton, although Felix D., scored 41 runs! Despite the end result, our students played incredibly well against some high calibre opposition. This is particularly impressive considering our team featured three Year 7 students who competed against teams of exclusively Year 10 students. Congratulations to them all – they have done the College proud.
Speak Out competition – an update
In my blog from 7 June, I proudly shared that students Izzy B. and Yuki I. had progressed to the finals of Anglia Ruskin University’s Speak Out competition. The competition challenged over 500 Year 10 students from across Cambridgeshire to test their public speaking skills. The final took place on Tuesday and both Yuki and Izzy spoke incredibly well – congratulations to both of them! Izzy placed third overall, which is so impressive considering the huge numbers of students who entered the competition. Thank you also to our students Joseph M. and Anna B. who supported at the event as timekeepers. Both of them are fantastic ambassadors for the College.
A sporting adventure in South Africa
I am proud of the robust and high-quality Rugby programme that is delivered at our Sixth Form. Students have the opportunity to combine the academic rigour of the IB with regular professional coaching, competitive fixtures, access to sports nutritionists and more. At the weekend, our current Rugby squad jetted to South Africa to take part in our first ever international Rugby tour. Our team are currently halfway through the tour and by the end of the trip, will have played three competitive fixtures against South African College teams. They are taking part in regular coaching sessions and have had the opportunity to visit some of the country’s stunning landmarks and scenery. So far, students have enjoyed travelling to the top of Table Mountain via cable car and sailing to Robben Island. They will end the trip over this weekend by spending time at the Aquila Game Reserve. Do keep an eye on our College Instagram page for photo highlights from the trip.
Join us at Spotlight 24
Our Performance School students have excelled across the academic year, dazzling audiences with a number of live performances, including three sold out nights of the Broadway classic, Guys and Dolls. They will round off their academic year on 10 and 11 July with ‘Spotlight 24’; a showcase of singing, dancing, and acting. The event will take place from 7PM in our Gropius Hall. Our Performance School students have a reputation for selling out their events, so do secure your ticket before it’s too late!
Showcasing the world of opportunities provided by the IB
The breadth and depth of IB programmes equips our students with the tools and knowledge to succeed in whichever career path they choose to pursue. We try hard to showcase the broad range of career opportunities available to our students during their time at the College. Last week, our Year 7 students took part in a fun event to learn more about the diversity of their career options. Form the Future’s ‘What’s My Line’ event invited our students to ask individuals from varying different careers a series of questions to try and guess what the individual did for work. The individuals then provided an overview of what they do for work, how they got to their position and what they enjoy about they do. Our students had a fantastic time learning more about different careers and found the experience to be rewarding.
Enhancing our students’ knowledge of History
Trips help to bring our students’ classroom learning to life and I am always keen to explore opportunities for students to enhance their learning outside of the College. Tomorrow morning, a cohort of our History students will learn more about the First World War during a visit to various battlefields throughout Belgium. They will visit famous sites that tell the story of both the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Ypres, including the trenches at Newfoundland Park, Vimy Ridge and Langemarck Cemetery, as well as the memorials of Tyne Cot, the Menin Gate, and Thiepval. We have run this trip for a number of years and it is always an interesting and moving trip for our students. I look forward to hearing about their experiences upon their return to the College on Monday.
Unleashing the force of learning at Physics Jamboree
On Wednesday, our Year 8 Science students joined together with students from across the county to bolster their knowledge of Physics during Isaac Physics’ Key Stage 3 Jamboree. Our students travelled to the Cavendish Library to listen to a series of talks delivered by experts from Isaac Physics and participate in a number of problem-solving challenges. They enjoyed the experience and relished the opportunity to stretch and hone their Physics skills in one of the Nation’s foremost physics collections.
Jubilations at Jubilee Cup
Finally, on Wednesday, around 80 of our students from across the College travelled to the Wilberforce Road Athletics Track to take part in the Jubilee Cup. Despite it being one of the hottest days of the year so far, our students performed with courage and determination in a series of track and field events against 12 other state and independent schools. I am incredibly proud of their efforts, sportsmanship and sporting prowess, which they displayed throughout. Overall, we finished sixth place overall, which is a tremendous effort and I’d like to congratulate all of our students who took part.
